The M-497 “Black Beetle”, a jet-powered prototype engine designed and tested by the New York Central Railroad, was tested in New York during the summer of 1966 and set a speed record of 183 miles per hour.

Mountain Monorail was illustrated by Kikuzo Ito in 1936. Powered by a propeller, kept in balance by wind pressure on the central tail fin, and held upright at stops by wheels that extended from the sides, it did not happen.
