Another one bites the dust

August 24, 2010

Today the Cobb County board of Commissioners will hear a presentation by the county’s Department of Transportation Director Faye DiMassimo on a proposal for CCT service cuts.  Like transit systems around the nation and our state, CCT is facing significant budget shortfalls and has been asked to cut service by 5% and reduce operating costs by $3 million.  It’s likely that this will mean an increase in fares, from the cheap $1.50 to match MARTA’s $2 for local service and express service will increase to $4 from $3 one way.

This could also mean cutting customer service hours, closing the two customer service locations, or more significantly, eliminating Saturday service altogether.  CCT currently does not run on Sunday and if they choose to cut Saturday service, that means the only transit in Cobb on the weekends would be MARTA route 12 to the Cumberland Transfer Center.

When I still lived in Smyrna I was lucky enough to live within walking distance of the CTC.  It was a long, hard walk which required a stop off at the QT on Spring for midway refreshment, but it was doable.  I can’t imagine that they would cut service entirely on the weekends.  I can’t even imagine that they don’t have Sunday service, let alone this.

Public hearings will be scheduled September 13th and 14th, tentatively, with adoption of the budget to happen September 28th.  If you live in Cobb, make sure you attend so that your voice is heard!

(and yes, it is Queen day, and no, I don’t know why, but I make no apologies.)
